Health Resource Centers (HRCs)
In response to the Philadelphia School District's Policy 123, the Family Planning Council, in partnership with the School District, area adolescent health care providers and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, administers a condom availability program in the Philadelphia high schools. The program's goal is to reduce the incidence of HIV, STDs and unintended pregnancy among students. This effort is made through school-based Health Resource Centers (HRCs) designed to provide students-- both in the schools and in their surrounding communities- with condoms and referrals to family planning and related health services. The existing thirteen HRCs are staffed by counselors, social workers, and health educators from local health providers.
These centers are confidential places where teens can go to receive condoms, along with counseling, on abstinence, health and sexuality information, and referrals.
Schools with HRCs are:
Edison High School with services provided by St. Christopher's Hospital for Children
